THE MARKED HUMAN (1996)

/ Det mærkede menneske, 1996

An installation that explores the dark marks on human existence.

The Marked Human I

The series shows X-rays of the artist’s torso with a lymphoma between the lung and the heart. The exhibition of a seemingly standard X-ray representation testifies the human existence marked by a serious illness.

Exhibited / Presented
Anna Nordlandar Museum 1997, Charlottenborg 1999.

The Marked Human II

The series explores a variety of expressions of fascist actions, linking together the artist’s personal experience with cancer and the larger theme of fascism, expressed in 7 small tableaus inside glass display cases. The tableaus go beyond the obvious, including for example the vindictive treatment of the Danes affiliated with Germans after the Second World War. The series is dedicated to Poul Henningsen and was awarded Anna Nordlandar’s Prize in 1997.

The work consists of 37 slate boards that list the names of the German concentration camps from the Second World War as well as the names of concentration camps from the war in Ex-Yugoslavia. Finally, a few of the slate boards are left blank, to testify the possibility of future atrocities.
